Strathmore
Strathmore, is on the Miramar Peninsula in Wellington, next to the suburbs of Miramar and Seatoun. Like the names of many other Wellington suburbs, Strathmore is a Scottish name which means 'great valley' in Gaelic. This diverse suburb has a mixture of new and old houses, state housing units, many red-brick residences and delightful art deco dwellings through to modern family homes. The Wellington "green belt" crosses the top of the Beacon Hill and the Eastern Walkway winds through this. Located on the Miramar Peninsula, Strathmore enjoys a slightly warmer and sunnier climate than the western side of the city and several streets enjoy a special microclimate in which fruit trees and rose bushes thrive. Strathmore Community School is the only public primary school. There are two pre-schools and Scots College (a private school). Wellington Airport is only a 5 minute drive away, as is Miramar golf course and the wonderful beaches around the Seatoun Bays. Strathmore Park has a small group of shops and an excellent bus service.
